About us


The Centre for Competency Based Learning and Development (CCBL&D) is an entity established under the Institute of Research, Innovation, and Development (IRID) within the Kumasi Technical University. The Centre provides high quality competency-based training programmes and consultancy services.

Welcome to the Centre for Competency Based Learning and Development (CCBL&D). We are very happy to give you a comprehensive guide to our esteemed Centre, and the valuable services we offer. We encourage students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders who are interested in leveraging our expertise in Competency Based Training curricula development to contact our Centre to learn and adventure with us. 

Training

Training: The center has an ongoing Training and capacity building in research, data analysis and management for the Ghana Police Service.

The center has also organized a capacity building in management of members of the Christian Mothers Association, Kumasi

Training of leather bags manufacturers in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. The activity which was funded by BUSAC Fund aimed at upscaling the skill of bag manufacturers. The training focus was developing business and customer management skills, and unique product design.

Research


Research: the center has recently completed some research activities. These include completed data collection and currently preparing report on the COVID-19 Stimulus package the Government of Ghana Training granted SMEs. The study is expected to unravel the impact of the package and the current state of the beneficiary enterprises.

The Centre for Technology Transfer and Skills Development (CTTSD) is a specialized unit within Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) dedicated to bridging the gap between academia and industry. Our mission is to facilitate the transfer of innovative technologies, foster skills development, and drive entrepreneurship through capacity-building programs, research collaborations, and strategic partnerships.

2023 STEM Clinic

The 2023 STEM Clinic was a one-day seminar held in the Kumasi Metropolis, aimed at enhancing knowledge and awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among senior high school students and their tutors. Organized by the Centre for Technology Transfer and Skills Development (CTTSD), the event brought together students and teachers from ten selected science-focused senior high schools.

Research Institutions and Universities


Academic collaborations with research institutions and universities enhance the quality and relevance of CTTSD’s programs. By working with higher education institutions, CTTSD ensures that its curriculum remains up-to-date with global trends and technological advancements. These partnerships facilitate joint research projects, knowledge sharing, and innovation in various fields, including digital transformation, green technology, and business development.

Non-government organizations (NGOs)


Partnerships with NGOs help expand the reach and impact of CTTSD’s initiatives, particularly in marginalized and underserved communities. NGOs provide essential support in advocacy, community engagement, and funding, ensuring that training programs benefit disadvantaged groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities. By collaborating with international and local NGOs focused on education, sustainability, and social development, CTTSD enhances its efforts in empowering individuals through skills training, entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

Private-sector organizations


Collaboration with private sector organizations plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between training and industry needs. CTTSD partners with companies across various sectors, including manufacturing, technology, construction, and agriculture, to provide hands-on training, internships, and employment opportunities for trainees. These partnerships enable businesses to access a skilled workforce while allowing students and entrepreneurs to gain practical experience and industry insights.

Government Agencies


CTTSD works closely with various government agencies to align its programs with national development goals and policies. Partnerships with the ministries of education, trade, labour, and environment ensure that training and capacity-building initiatives meet regulatory standards and industry requirements. Government collaboration also facilitates funding opportunities, policy advocacy, and the integration of TVET programs into broader economic development strategies.

Capacity-building for MSMEs

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play a crucial role in economic development, and this initiative is designed to strengthen their capacity through business development services. The program offers training in financial management, strategic planning, access to markets, and regulatory compliance. Entrepreneurs receive mentorship, networking opportunities, and guidance on securing funding to scale their businesses. Additionally, the initiative provides specialised support for women-led enterprises and startups to enhance their growth potential.

Digital Transformation Training

The Digital Transformation Training initiative is designed to equip individuals, businesses, and institutions with essential digital skills for Industry 4.0. This program focuses on areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital marketing, data analytics, and e-commerce. Training sessions target students, professionals, and entrepreneurs, helping them adapt to the evolving technological landscape. Special attention is given to small business owners, enabling them to leverage digital tools to improve efficiency, market reach, and competitiveness.

Green Innovation & Sustainability

This initiative promotes eco-friendly solutions and circular economy practices to address environmental challenges while fostering economic growth. It supports innovations in waste recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture, with a strong focus on integrating green practices into small businesses and urban microenterprises. By partnering with researchers, policymakers, and the private sector, the program facilitates knowledge transfer and the adoption of sustainable business models.

TVET Enhancement Programs


The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Enhancement Programs aim to empower youth and women with practical skills that improve their employability and entrepreneurial potential. These initiatives focus on equipping participants with industry-relevant competencies in areas such as carpentry, fashion design, electrical installation, welding, and catering. By strengthening partnerships with industries, technical institutions, and policymakers, the program ensures that training aligns with labour market demands.

Irid Management

With the enactment of the Technical University Act 2016 (Act 922), the University Statute (Statute 40) established IRID as a five (5) center institute consisting of

CRDTI conducted a comprehensive drone piloting training program for 20 students from KsTU

Drone Piloting 


CRDTI conducted a comprehensive drone piloting training program for 20 students from KsTU. Spanning two weeks, the training began with a week dedicated to teaching the basic theories of flying drones, covering essential principles and safety protocols. The second week focused on practical experience, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge through hands-on practice sessions, honing their piloting skills and gaining confidence in operating drones.

CRDTI collaborated with DEVAR, the creators of WEBAR, to train 20 students on Augmented Reality (AR)

AR Training 


CRDTI collaborated with DEVAR, the creators of WEBAR, to train 20 students from KsTU and 2 staff members on the basics of augmented reality (AR) development. A resource person from DEVAR conducted the training, which took place over the course of a single day. The event provided participants with hands-on experience and foundational knowledge in AR technology, equipping them with skills to develop their own AR applications.

CRDTI Holds an impactful seminar on Emergent Technologies

E-Tech Seminar 


CRDTI held an impactful seminar on Emergent Technologies at the SRC Conference room, which successfully engaged over 100 engineering students. The seminar aimed to expose students to a diverse array of cutting-edge technologies, including Arduino, 3D printing, robotics, and drones, among others. These technologies represent significant advancements in various engineering fields, offering students a glimpse into the future of innovation and practical applications.

CRDTI inaugurated its technological hub - The K-Innovation Hub

CRDTI has inaugurated its technological hub with the aim of empowering students and the public by providing skills and access to relevant equipment to transform ideas into reality. The hub currently features state-of-the-art technologies, including 3D printers for training in modeling and rapid prototyping, drones for training drone pilots and providing skills to build, program, and customize drones for localized purposes, and VR headsets to enable users to develop products in the metaverse.

CRDTI organized an innovation exhibition at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU)-Innovation Exhibition ‘24

CRDTI organized an innovation exhibition at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) to encourage students and staff to develop innovative solutions to prevailing challenges in communities across Ghana. Students formed teams and presented their innovations at the exhibition, showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills. The judges for the event were engineering professionals who are members of the Ghana Institution of Engineering.

Arduino programming


The Arduino Programming Course at Kumasi Technical University is an introductory hands-on program designed to teach students the fundamentals of working with Arduino, a popular open-source electronics platform. The course focuses on programming and interfacing Arduino microcontrollers to create interactive electronic projects. Students will learn the basics of C/C++ programming, circuit design, and sensor integration, as well as how to control actuators, LEDs, motors, and other components.

The Python Programming Course at Kumasi Technical University is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Python, one of the most versatile and widely-used programming languages. Students will also explore practical applications, including web development, data analysis, and automation, through hands-on projects and exercises.

3D modelling and printing

3D modelling and printing


The 3D Modeling and Printing course at Kumasi Technical University is an innovative program designed to introduce students to the world of digital design and additive manufacturing. This hands-on course covers the fundamentals of 3D modeling using industry-standard software, teaching students how to create detailed digital prototypes and designs. Participants will also learn about 3D printing technologies, materials, and processes, gaining practical experience in turning digital models into physical objects.

In May 2011, the academic board of the then Kumasi Polytechnic approved the establishment of the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Innovation – SGSRI with the then Dr. Osei Wusu Achaw as our pioneer Director.
